OTC/EXTRA Fellows

Dr. Bourgeault is the University of Ottawa site lead for the OTC program http://www.otc-hsr.ca/, a diploma program offered at six Ontario universities (McMaster, University of Toronto, York University, Laurentian University and Lakehead University) that can be taken concurrently with a participating Master's or Doctoral program. In addition to being able to take courses across all six sites, OTC students also participate in a summer institute and a 200 hour policy practicum.

Affiliated with the OTC program is the EXTRA fellowship program, which aims to provide health system managers with the skills to increase the utilization of research knowledge in their day-to-day work, as a way to increase evidence-informed decision-making in the health system [http://www.otc-hsr.ca/]. Largely through the MOHLTC funded research networks that Dr. Bourgeault leads, she has supervised the following OTC practicum and EXTRA fellows:

    • Project Title: Understanding policies targeting Community Health Workers/Lay Health Workers (CHWs/LHWs)/Personal Support Workers’ (PSWs) in caregiving and chronic disease prevention and management with immigrant and aboriginal populations in Ontario
    • Project Description: This project focused on understanding the legislative framework and identifying any policies about personal support workers (PSWs)/lay health workers (LHW) in caregiving and especially those targeting immigrant and aboriginal populations in Ontario This project used three research strategies: A) literature review and document analysis of published literature; B) key informant interviews with policy makers at the provincial and federal level; and, C) informal stakeholder survey with representatives from local and regional public health and primary care agencies and institutions. Through these strategies this project identified health human resources issues for PSWs/LHWs in publically funded homecare and long-term care homes, as well as in private homes. Private home care was included in the project because it arose when using the terms “immigrants” and “care workers” Status Completed between fall 2010 and spring 2011
